This site is really about whatever interests me, but a loose theme is about starting something from where you’re at. Starting from nothing is a misnomer; we all start with somewhere and with something (e.g., our genes, minds, bodies, environment, etc. all offer something, even if not as much as we’d like). I dig the stoic notion of largely ignoring whatever’s beyond your control in favor of whatever’s within your locus of control (though you can often influence some things beyond your control, it’s often better to preference what you know you can affect — you can take this too far toward nihilism too though).
I try (and often fail) to view most things from this standpoint. Learning something new? Don’t let what you don’t know, get in the way of what you do. Just start where you’re at. You can start reading books or articles. You can ask questions. You can listen to a podcast or audiobook. Improving your health? Just start with something. You probably already know something you can do (learning how to do something can be a blocker too, by the way. If you already know you should walk or move more daily, and but you’re not upping your steps/stair/miles/etc., is reading a new health-related book going to help you more than creating a new healthy habit of walking?). Starting a business? You probably have most of what you need already. You can focus on utopia, the perfect conditions for your dream business, or you can look at what you already have at your disposal and start there. Need funding? You can likely sell some stuff you don’t need. You can cut some spending elsewhere. Bootstrap. Start on a shoestring budget and just start validating your business ideas. See if you can make and sell one item or service.
So, this site is poorly named because I’m not sure anything starts from “nothing.” But I think you get what I’m gettin’ at. We can almost always start something, right now, with whatever we got. And if we do that, and keep doing it, eventually, we’ll end up with something (e.g., better health, wealth, or expertise) that looks like it started from nothing.
